It is common for vintage perfume liquids to darken significantly over time, shifting from light yellow or pink to deep amber, orange, or even dark brown. Understanding this chemical process is key to collecting vintage perfume.

The Culprits of Darkening

1. **Schiff Bases**: The reaction between aldehydes and nitrogen-containing compounds (like anthranilates or indoles) creates deep yellow or brown pigments.

2. **Vanillin**: Natural vanillin and ethyl vanillin oxidize over time, turning the liquid a dark amber-brown. This is extremely common in vanilla-heavy perfumes like Guerlain *Shalimar*.

3. **Oakmoss & Patchouli**: Natural plant extracts degrade and change color in response to oxygen exposure.

Spoilage vs. Maturation

  • **Maturation (Good)**: A deeper color, rounder edges, and more prominent base notes. The fragrance smells smooth and rich.
  • **Spoilage (Bad)**: A sour, vinegary, or metallic smell resembling nail polish remover. This is caused by the oxidation of ethanol into acetic acid.
