Perfume Evaporation: Angels' Share

When buying a vintage perfume, you will often find that the liquid level is lower than the original fill volume, even if the bottle has never been sprayed and is still sealed in its box. In the spirits industry, this is known as the **Angels' Share**.

Why Does it Happen?

No glass-to-cork or glass-to-metal seal is 100% impermeable to gas molecules over 30, 40, or 50 years.

  • **Solvent Escape**: Perfumes are 80-90% alcohol (ethanol). Ethanol molecules are extremely small and volatile. Over decades, they slow-diffuse through micro-gaps in crimps or screw caps.
  • **Pressure Differentials**: Changes in temperature and barometric pressure cause the air inside the bottle to expand and contract. This creates a pumping effect, forcing tiny amounts of vapor out of the bottle.

Is the Perfume Spoiled?

Not necessarily. While the top notes (light citrus and aldehydes) have likely dissipated or oxidized, the middle and base notes (resins, woods, balsams, musks) often become **more concentrated** and rich. Many collectors prefer the deep, resinous scent of a slightly evaporated vintage bottle.
