Physical State Alteration

A deep chemical dive into state alteration of aged perfume molecules.

Physical State Alteration

Over time, the components of a perfume interact with each other and with trace amounts of oxygen and light inside the bottle.

Chemical Changes

  • **Aldehyde Degradation**: Citrusy and bright top notes fade first. The aldehydes break down into acids and esters.
  • **Precipitation**: Natural raw materials (resins, absolute oils) may leave sediment or cloudiness. This is normal and does not mean the perfume is ruined.
  • **Maceration**: Over time, the ingredients blend together more seamlessly. Many vintage perfumes smell smoother and more coherent than their modern counterparts.
